Black, Yellow, or Chocolate: Does Your Lab's Coat Color Matter?

Black, yellow, or chocolate? Here's what coat color really says about your Lab, and what it doesn't.

Black, Yellow, or Chocolate: Does Your Lab's Coat Color Matter?

Every Lab owner has heard it at the dog park: "Chocolates are crazy," "Yellows are mellow," "Blacks are the smart ones." So is there any truth to it? Here's what coat color actually tells you.

How Lab colors work

Lab coat color comes down to two genes working together. One decides whether the coat pigment is black or brown (chocolate). The other decides whether that pigment shows up in the coat at all. When it doesn't, you get a yellow Lab, anywhere from pale cream to deep "fox red."

That's why two black Labs can have a litter with yellow or chocolate puppies, and why a yellow Lab can quietly carry the genes for black or chocolate.

Does color change personality?

There's no solid evidence that coat color decides temperament. Differences in energy and focus are much more about breeding lines (field Labs tend to be leaner and more driven, while show Labs are often stockier and more laid-back), plus training, exercise, and the individual dog.

So if your chocolate Lab is bouncing off the walls, it's probably not the color. It's probably the Lab.

What research has found about health

In 2018, a large study of Labradors in the UK found that chocolate Labs had a shorter median lifespan than black and yellow Labs, along with higher rates of ear inflammation and hot spots. Researchers suggested this may be linked to breeding specifically for the chocolate color, which narrows the gene pool, rather than the color itself.

It's one study, and every Lab is an individual. But it's a good reminder that skin and ear care matter for every Lab, whatever their color.

Every color, one Lab

Black, yellow, or chocolate, Labs share the same big heart, big appetite, and love of water. They also share the same core wellness priorities: joints, skin and coat, digestion, and healthy aging. What really shapes the right support is your dog's age, weight, activity, and what you're seeing day to day.
